President Trump Announces Ratepayer Protection Pledge

In his 2026 State of the Union address, President Donald Trump introduced a “Ratepayer Protection Pledge” to address the rising electricity costs caused by energy-intensive AI data centers.

The key points from his speech regarding data centers included:

  • Self-Generation Requirement: Trump stated that major tech companies have an “obligation to provide for their own power needs”. He urged these companies to build their own dedicated power plants to support their facilities.
  • Cost Mitigation: The primary goal of the “Ratepayer Protection Pledge” is to ensure that tech companies, rather than local residents, bear the increased electricity costs associated with new data centers. This is intended to prevent price spikes for households and small businesses.
  • Grid Capacity Concerns: Trump noted that the current U.S. power grid is “old” and unable to handle the massive energy demands of modern AI infrastructure.
  • Economic Impact: He claimed that by having companies produce their own electricity, it would not only prevent price increases but, in some cases, could even lead to lower electricity prices for the surrounding communities.
  • National Uniformity: The administration is pushing for uniform federal regulations for data centers to avoid a “patchwork” of different state laws.

While the president did not name specific companies during the speech, reports indicate that the White House plans to host tech leaders in early March to formalize these agreements.

President Trump revealed some basic premises of the plan, especially noting that this is a voluntary measure to encourage top tech companies to “pay their own way”, but no specific details have been fully released yet.
