TUPELO, Miss. (AP) — The city of Tupelo should start saving $140,000 or more each year for the next two decades by upgrading to more efficient lighting at athletic fields, parks and government buildings.
Under the energy savings contract with Schneider Electric, the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal reports the city will spend about $5.3 million to replace the old lighting at 27 athletic fields, revamp lighting inside more than 20 city buildings and convert outdoor lighting to longer lasting LED fixtures.
By spending the money now, Schneider Electric consultant Emily Keith says the city would save a minimum of $2.8 million in utility costs over the next 20 years.
Tupelo Chief Operating Officer Don Lewis said the project began with talks years ago to improve the lighting at sports fields and grew to other city facilities.
