ATLANTA — Acuity Brands, Inc. recently announced that Cheryl English, VP-Government & Industry Relations, has been elected to the position of Vice President, President-Elect for the Illuminating Engineering Society (IES). Effective as of July 1, English will serve three consecutive, one-year terms with the trade association, first as Vice President, followed by President and then as Past-President serving on the IES Board of Directors.
In addition, Antonio Giacobbe, Senior Corporate Accounts Manager, has been elected to a one-year term on the IES Board of Directors. The two leaders will provide strategic council to the Society’s long-term planning, operations, education and research priorities.
“The lighting industry continues to evolve more toward integrated, smart lighting systems, and I look forward to guiding policy on this transformation,” said English. “As the landscape changes, we must continue to promote standards of high energy efficiency and lighting quality.”
English is currently serving a two-term on the LIGHTFAIR® International management committee. In 2015, English earned a Distinguished Engineering Alumni Award (DEAA) from the College of Engineering and Applied Science at the University of Colorado at Boulder. English previously received the IES Distinguished Service Award, IES Fellow Award and IES Presidential Award for service related to lighting education, technical standards, legislative and regulatory activities and standards for controlling outdoor light pollution. She also received the NEMA Kite and Key award for outstanding contributions to the electrical industry.
In addition to her position with Acuity Brands, English is the executive director of the Jim H. McClung Lighting Research Foundation and Chairman of the Board for the Besal Lighting Education Fund., She also serves on the National Institute of Building Sciences board of directors and Lighting Division of the National Electrical Manufacturers Association division management.
Giacobbe currently serves as the District Chair for the 6th IES District, and was a past Vice Chair and Past-President for the Puget Sound (Seattle) section of IESNA. In addition, he is a member of the Lighting Subcommittee for ASHRAE/IES 90.1 Energy Standard.
