A $5 billion grant program opened for allocation request on January 18, 2024. On top of an additional $562 million that is available through FY24 grants. The Grid Resilience State/Tribal Formula Grants Program is a part of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law program that passed back in 2021.
The program is in response to an increase in wildfires, extreme weather, and other natural disasters that have been amplified by the climate crisis. These disasters have caused a surge in power outages across the U.S. The goal of this program is to strengthen and modernize America’s power grid against these threats.
The funds are to be distributed to states, territories, and federally recognized Indian tribes over five years all based upon factors of population size, land area, probability, severity of disruptive events, and the local history on mitigation efforts. Priority is given to those who will receive the greatest community benefit from providing clean, affordable, and reliable energy. All work on this provision is done in coordination with the Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations.
Applicants have until June 17, 2024 at 11:59 PM ET to apply for allocation.
To apply for the FY24 allocations is dependent on the applicant’s status in the FY24 program. Existing grant recipients from FY22/23 have 90 days from the issuance of the ALRD amendment to request. Current grant applicants for FY22/23 that have not their grant at the time of the ALRD amendment have 90 days to amend their previously submitted grant application to include FY24 allocations. Any new grant applicants have 90 days from the issue of the ALRD amendment to submit grand application for FY24 allocations.
